The year 1936 was a key propaganda year for the Third Reich due to the organization of the Summer Olympics in Berlin. During this period, Nazi iconography readily employed neo-Romanesque, medieval, and chivalric motifs. The figure of a mighty warrior or the legendary Roland against the backdrop of the Dortmund skyline was meant to symbolize Germanic pride, strength, a reference to the traditions of the supposed "Thousand-Year Reich," and the defense of national values. The placement of the swastika and oak leaves at the bottom linked this historical symbolism with the current National Socialist ideology.
