The Bochum Congress in July 1935 took place in a very specific political atmosphere. More than a year earlier (in June 1934), Hitler had brutally crushed internal party opposition during the "Night of the Long Knives." By 1935, the party was fully consolidated, and its power was total. A few months before this congress (in March 1935), Germany had openly rejected the Treaty of Versailles, introducing universal compulsory military service and announcing the creation of the Wehrmacht. The congresses during this period were characterized by a powerful surge in military pride and nationalism. Just two months after the Bochum Congress (in September 1935), the racist Nuremberg Laws were promulgated.
